Devon Alexander to fight Purdy after Kell Brook suffers injury

April 30, 2013

Once again fate has stopped Kell Brook and  IBF Welterweight World Champion Devon Alexander from meeting in the ring, as Brook has suffered a foot injury that will require him to withdraw from their May 18 bout.

Injuries already have stopped this fight twice before, with a Kell Brook bum ankle causing the first postponement and an Alexander bicep strain necessitating the second.

Now that the third attempt has failed, England's Lee Purdy, the number four rated IBF welterweight contender, will face Alexander in place of Kell Brook, rather than scheduling the original bout a fourth time.  The bout will be televised on Showtime as part of its Lamont Peterson-Lucas Matthysse broadcast.

"We look forward to Devon facing a formidable opponent in the U.K.'s Lee Purdy," said Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.  "We have a great card for fans in Atlantic City and those watching at home on Showtime and it will be an exciting night for everyone on May 18th."

St. Louis' Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO's) is an excellent boxer, but has had some lackluster performances of late. Only 25, Alexander nevertheless was looking forward to a bounce back effort against Brook, but now will have to switch gears and prepare for an entirely new opponent on the fly.

Lee "Lights Out" Purdy (20-3-1, 13 KO's) has amazed British fans by climbing the welterweight division despite having no amateur career.  A pro since 2006, the 25-year-old brings a knockout streak into his first world title fight, having finished off four consecutive opponents, including longtime contender Cosme Rivera in March.
