LA Kings trade goaltender Bernier

June 23, 2013

The Los Angeles Kings today acquired forward Matt Frattin, goaltender Ben Scrivens, and a second round draft selection from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for promising goaltender Jonathan Bernier.

Bernier was a more-than-capable backup this year to Kings star goalie Jonathan Quick, as he produced a 9-3-1 record with a save percentage of .922. His goals-against average was 1.88.

However, with Quick under contract for years to come, Bernier had little hope of seeing the playing  time he desired.

Now he will finally get his opportunity.

Bernier joined the Kings in 2006, when the club selected the netminder in the first round (11th overall) of the NHL Entry Draft.  He played in 62 career regular season games with LA and had a 29-20-6 record, a .912 save percentage, a 2.36 goals-against-average and six shutouts.

Frattin, 25, played in 25 regular season games last year with the Maple Leafs.  He recorded 13 points, including seven goals (three of which were game-winners).  During the playoffs, the 6-0, 200-pounder from Edmonton, Alberta, played in six games and recorded two assists.

In 82 career regular season NHL games, all with the Maple Leafs, Frattin has 28 points (15-13=28).

Scrivens, 26, this past season played in 20 games with the Maple Leafs.  He posted a 7-9-0 record, two shutouts, a 2.69 goals-against-average and a .915 save percentage.

The second round draft selection acquired by the Kings will be for 2014 or 2015, at Toronto’s option.
