The Dallas Mavericks yesterday signed free agent guard Jose Juan Barea. Other outlets have reported that he will earn the veteran's minimum of $1.3 million this season. Barea will wear number 5.
The 6-0 point guard played for the Timberwolves the past three seasons, but he is very well known to the Mavericks. He holds career averages of 8.3 points, 3.4 assists and 19.0 minutes in 509 career games (59 starts) while shooting .419 from the floor and .798 from the foul line.
Prior to going to Minnesota, Barea played 315 games in a Dallas jersey averaging 7.1 points and 2.9 assists. Barea also saw action in the NBA Playoffs each of his five seasons in Dallas, accruing averages of 7.7 points and 3.0 points in 40 postseason games (7 starts).
Most memorably Barea was an integral part of the Mavericks championship squad in 2011-11, when he averaged 9.5 points and 3.9 assists in 20.6 minutes. Barea was used that season as a vital offensive weapon off the bench, providing three-point shooting and dribble penetration for Dallas' second unit.
Barea averaged 21.0 points, 8.4 assists and 4.4 rebounds at Northwestern University before entering the 2006 NBA Draft. Originally undrafted, Barea was signed by Dallas as a rookie free agent on Aug. 17, 2006.
The Mavericks also announced yesterday that they have requested waivers on guard 6-3 guard Gal Mekel.
Mekel was in his second year with the Mavericks and averaged 2.4 points, 2.0 assists, and 9.4 minutes in 31 games for Dallas during the 2013-14 campagin.
A native of Israel, Mekel also averaged 7.6 points, 3.9 assists, and 1.8 rebounds in Mavericks eight preseason games this season.
