Long Beach State women’s basketball head coach Jody Wynn announced in a release today the signing of a versatile recruiting class to National Letters of Intent. The class of four prep standouts will join the Beach in 2015-16, and consists of Aaryon Green (Rialto, Calif.), Chanterria Jackson (McKinney, Texas), Martina McCowan (Portland, Ore.), and Katie Webster (Rockwall, Texas).
Aaryon Green is a three-time first-team All-Citrus Belt League selection under head coach Monique Martinez at Eisenhower High School. Green, a 6-foot-1 forward, has led the Eagles to three consecutive Division II CIF Southern Section playoff appearances. As a junior, she averaged 15.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game.
Last year, Green was named to the All-Area Girls’ Basketball Team by the Daily Bulletin and San Bernardino’s The Sun. Green plays club for coach Brian Crichlow and West Coast Premier, which is the same program that produced current 49er, Devin Hudson.
“Aaryon is a great athlete with tremendous upside,” Wynn said. “She can defend all over the court and is a very good rebounder. Aaryon played in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League this summer against the top girls’ basketball players in the country. Her length and speed at the post position will be a definite asset to our program.”
Chanterria Jackson is a 6-foot-1 forward from Texas. Last year, Jackson helped McKinney North High School to a runner-up finish at the 4A State Finals and earned all-tournament honors. She also received all-region and all-state recognition. Jackson is a three-time all-district selection, garnering first-team accolades as a sophomore and junior. She also plays club for coach Marty Murphy’s Texas Fire Black team.
“Chanterria has the ability to play inside and out, and guard all five positions,” Wynn said. “Her versatility fits very well within our system. Chanterria comes from a high school and club program where she has competed with and against some of the best athletes in the country.”
Martina McCowan is in her senior year under head coach Dewey Taylor at St. Mary’s Academy in Portland, Oregon. A 5-foot-9 point guard, she was named the 2014 Mt. Hood Conference Player of the Year after averaging 14.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game. McCowan also led the Blues to an appearance in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A State Tournament, garnering second-team all-state honors along the way. She was a first-team all-state selection as a sophomore. McCowan also plays club for coach Taylor and the 503 Runnin’ Rebels.
“Martina is a lockdown defender with 3-point range,” Wynn said. “Her length and athleticism can really disrupt an opponent’s offense. Martina plays with a high motor, can get to the paint and make her teammates better.”
Katie Webster, a 5-foot-11 guard, plays for head coach Devin Gabbard at Rockwall-Heath High School in Texas. Last year, she averaged 23.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Webster was tabbed her district’s co-Offensive Player of the Year, while she also garnered Texas Girls’ Coaches Association all-state honors. She is a three-time all-district selection, earning first-team recognition as a sophomore and junior. She plays club for coach Terry Young on Team Texas.
“Katie is one of the top scorers in the state of Texas,” Wynn said. “Her IQ and court awareness allow her to maximize her talents. Katie is a terrific 3-point shooter who can stretch the defense. She is a vocal leader, good passer and is able to use her length for deflections and to rebound.”
