The Los Angeles Kings have signed defenseman and Stanley Cup hero Alec Martinez to a six-year contract extension, Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi announced.
During the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the 6-1, 205-pound Martinez scored the Stanley Cup-clinching goal and the Western Conference Final-clinching goal, becoming the first player in NHL history to score at least two series-clinching OT goals in one playoff year, with one being the Stanley Cup clinching goal. Also, he was just the third player overall (first defenseman) to ever score multiple series-clinching OT goals in a single playoff year.
Martinez, 27, has appeared in 221 career NHL regular season games, all with the Kings, totaling 62 points (25-37=62), a plus-32 rating and 54 penalty minutes.
A fourth round (95th overall) selection of the Kings at the 2007 NHL Draft, Martinez has been a part of both Stanley Cup runs with Los Angeles. He has played in 59 career postseason games, registering 16 points (6-10=16), a plus-1 rating and 30 penalty minutes.
