Long Beach State loses nail-biter to #18 San Diego State, 60-59

December 11, 2014

Long Beach State narrowly missed pulling off an upset on the road against No. 18 San Diego State on road, losing 60-59.

The 49ers actually opened a seven point lead with 6:08 to play, but the Aztecs rallied late and pulled back out in front, taking the lead for good at 56-54 with 2:14 to play.

A final halfcourt heave at the buzzer fell short for the 49ers.

Long Beach State was led by Mike Caffey, who had 20 points and four assists, while Tyler Lamb added 13 points and three rebounds. Long distance shooting helped keep the 49ers in the game, as Long Beach State made 11 3-pointers, which helped offset a major rebounding edge for the Aztecs, 37-22. The Aztecs also shot 25 free throws, compared to just two for the 49ers.

“We played well in stretches, but not good enough down the stretch,” commented head coach Dan Monson. “We took a couple of tough shots, started trading baskets and fell in love with our offensive end. This is a game where you have to win with your defense. I thought we controlled that end of the floor for the first 35 minutes pretty well, but once we started scoring, our defensive intensity and attention to rebounding slipped a little.”

Long Beach State will have its longest break between game thus far into the season, getting 10 days off before the 49ers next action. The road trip continues for the Beach, as Long Beach State will play at No. 8 Texas on December 20 at 5 p.m. PT on the Longhorn Network.
