Oregon men's basketball coach Dana Altman signs extension

March 14, 2019

University of Oregon Director of Athletics Rob Mullens announced that the school has agreed to terms and is finalizing a contract extension with head men’s basketball coach Dana Altman, pending Board of Trustees approval. The agreement runs through the 2025-26 season and is funded from athletic sources.

“I am very, very grateful to President Schill, Rob Mullens, and the University of Oregon for their support and for the faith they have shown in me here,” said Altman. “I work for special people at a special place in front of special fans, and I look forward to coaching here for many years to come.”

Altman, the 2013 National Coach of the Year and a three-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year, joined Jim Boeheim, Tom Izzo, Mike Krzyzewski, Bill Self, and Roy Williams as the only six active head coaches in Division I with a current streak of at least 22 consecutive winning seasons.

In his nine seasons as the head coach of the Ducks, Altman has an overall record of 230-95 (.708), and is six wins away from become the Ducks’ all-time winningest head basketball coach.

The Ducks have achieved considerable success under Altman, advancing to the 2017 Final Four, two Elite Eights (2016, 2017), and three Sweet 16s (2013, 2016, 2017), while also winning two Pac-12 championships. Oregon has nine consecutive 20-win seasons under Altman and is one of only 11 programs nationally with an active streak of nine-plus 20-win campaigns (Belmont, Cincinnati, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, Saint Mary’s, and Vermont).

Oregon has posted nine consecutive winning seasons under Altman, the first time in UO history this has occurred since the 1923-32 campaigns.

The Ducks have also signed top-flight recruiting classes under Altman, as the incoming class signed last November represents the second consecutive top 10 class for the Ducks.

Altman arrived at UO following 16 seasons at Creighton, where he became the school’s career leader in victories with a record of 327-176 (.650). He led the Blue Jays to 13 consecutive postseason appearances, a streak of 11 consecutive 20-win seasons, and 10-plus league wins in 14 consecutive seasons. These three feats were unmatched in the 103-year history of the Missouri Valley Conference.
