Boxing Pound-for-Pound Rankings

November 5, 2008

With the upcoming Jones-Calzaghe fight on November 8, 2008, our boxing panel decided it would be a good time to put forth its pound-for-pound rankings.

1. MANNY PACQUIAO

A win over the Golden Boy in December would make him Fighter-of-the-Year.

2. BERNARD HOPKINS

Dominated Pavlik. Fight against Calzaghe should have been a draw at worst. Crafty defensive master deserves a bout with Jones-Calzaghe winner.

3. JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ

Outstanding performance against Pac-Man. Great victory over Casamayor. Now that Pac-Man has moved up, he is the best fighter in the lightweight division.

4. CHAD DAWSON

Two great victories against Tarver and Johnson. Has all the tools to be boxing's next superstar.

5. ANTONIO MARGARITO

What a world-class chin. Potential fight with Sugar Shane Mosley sounds exciting.

6. JOE CALZAGHE

Gift decision versus Hopkins, as B-Hop dictated the style of the fight. Victory over aging Jones proves little. Still, skills are legitimate, and record is perfect.

7. PAUL WILLIAMS

Arguably could be the best fighter at either 147, 154, or 160. A rematch with Margarito would thrill boxing fans.

8. NATE CAMPBELL

Fans would love to see him fight Marquez.

9. MIGUEL COTTO

Looked good much of the Margarito fight before collapsing. Chin more suspect than ever.

10. JOSHUA CLOTTEY

Powerful guy who deserves more fights with 147 elites.

OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES

Juan Diaz, Shane Mosley, Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali Klitschko, Andre Berto, Vic Darchinyan
