Keeping up their impressive international friendly schedule, the Los Angeles Galaxy recently announced that they will host Boca Juniors at Carson's Home Depot Center on Sunday, May 23, 2010.
The team from La Boca, Buenos Aires, sits second in all-time national championships with 23, behind its arch rival River Plate (33). Internationally, Boca has won 18 titles, tying it with AC Milan for the top spot.
Traditionally regarded as the club for Argentina’s working class, Boca Juniors have a pretty impressive youth system that has produced the likes of Carlos Tevez, Fernando Gago, and Juan Roman Riquelme. Even the great Diego Maradona himself played for Boca. Needless to say they have an extremely large following, many of whom are excited that a club of such prestige will be showcasing their talents in Southern California.
Having been left off of Maradona’s World Cup team, it is safe to assume that Juan Roman Riquelme will be playing. However, the real question is whether 36-year old scoring ace Martin Palermo will be present, since he is on Diego’s provisional squad.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy have a comfortable lead in the Western Conference and remain one of only two undefeated teams in the MLS. With Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle receiving World Cup call-ups, the Galaxy are definitely poised to give Boca Juniors a run for their money.
We predict a 3-2 Galaxy win.
