LA Galaxy re-sign Keane, Juninho

January 17, 2013

The Los Angeles Galaxy agreed to a multi-year contract extension with forward Robbie Keane. Keane, the team 2012 MVP, led LA with 16 regular season goals and nine assists. He was also clutch in the postseason, leading MLS with six goals and driving the Galaxy to their second consecutive championship. With David Beckham now gone from the team, securing Keane to a long-term deal had become a high priority for the Galaxy's brass.

Since joining the Galaxy in August 2011, Keane has produced 18 goals and 10 assists in 32 regular season games, while adding seven goals and two assists in 10 postseason games. In 2012, he was named to the MLS Best XI for the first time. Keane scored in each of the Galaxy’s final four games, including a penalty kick in stoppage time of the 3-1 win over Houston in the MLS Cup.

In addition, the Galaxy also signed Brazilian midfielder Juninho to a multi-year contract. After spending each of the past three seasons with the Galaxy on loan from Brazilian club Sao Paulo, the 24-year-old has now been permanently transferred to the club and will re-join the team for the preseason.

Since first joining the Galaxy ahead of the start of the 2010 MLS season, Juninho has appeared in 87 regular season games, scoring 13 goals and adding eight assists. He set career-highs in 2012 by appearing in 32 regular season games, while adding seven goals and four assists.

After setting up Mike Magee’s 70th minute equalizer against Vancouver in the Knockout Round for the first assist of his postseason career, Juninho added his second in the MLS Cup against Houston, providing the cross for an Omar Gonzalez equalizing header.
