The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today took a big step towards upgrading their secondary, signing free agent safety Dashon Goldson to a five-year contract. Other outlets have reported that the deal is for $41.25 million, with $22 million guaranteed.
Goldson (6-2, 200) joins the Bucs from the San Francisco 49ers, where he was selected as a fourth-round pick from the University of Washington in the 2007 NFL Draft. After becoming a starter at free safety in 2009, Goldson earned Pro Bowl selections in 2011 and 2012. He also was a first first-team All-Pro in 2012.
With Goldson, Tampa Bay has added an experienced veteran in their secondary who can force turnovers and play well in big games.
In fact, Goldson has started in five playoff games -- Super Bowl XLVII included -- producing 47 tackles, one interception, three passes defensed, and one forced fumble.
In 2011, Goldson finished tied for second in the NFL with six interceptions, and his nine interceptions over the past two seasons ranks tied for sixth-most in the NFL during that span.
With Goldson leading the 49er secondary, San Francisco's 2012 pass defense ranked fourth overall in the NFL, allowing only 200.2 passing yards per game.
The Niners franchised Goldson last year, but Goldson made clear to the club this offseason that he preferred to explore the free agent market.
During his six-year career, Goldson has played in 81 games, recording 443 tackles, three sacks, 14 interceptions, 35 passes defensed, five forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries.
