Kershaw wins NL Pitcher of the Month; Dodgers call up Dee Gordon

August 5, 2013

Major League Baseball announced today that Los Angeles Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw has been voted National League Pitcher of the Month for July after producing a 4-1 record in six starts.

Kershaw also led the National League with a 1.34 ERA, allowing only seven earned runs in his League-best 47 innings of work. In addition, he held opposing hitters to a .161 batting average and tallied 43 strikeouts, while walking just two.

On July 2, Kershaw notched his second complete game shutout of the season, blanking the Colorado Rockies in an impressive 8-0 win at Coors Field. On July 7, the Dodgers ace dominated the rival Giants, allowing just one run in 8 innings of work to earn his third win against the defending champs this season.

In other Dodgers news, the team today recalled shortstop Dee Gordon from Triple-A Albuquerque with the idea of providing some insurance in the infield following Hanley Ramirez's recent shoulder injury.  The Dodgers also optioned right-handed pitcher Stephen Fife to Albuquerque.

Fife, 26, had been pitching well, as seen by the 5.1 innings of scoreless ball he threw recently against the Cubs on the road. Ramirez, arguably the team's MVP, sustained his injury in that same Chicago series chasing a fly ball into the stands.

Gordon, 25, has hit safely in his last 17 games with Albuquerque and is blessed with tremendous speed, but struggled in his previous trip to the bigs, batting only .175.
