Steelers acquire running back Felix Jones in trade with Eagles

August 23, 2013

In a move designed to boost their depth at running back, the Pittsburgh Steelers today have agreed to trade linebacker Adrian Robinson to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for veteran running back Felix Jones.

With rookie 2013 second round pick Le'Veon Bell sidelined due to a sprained foot, the Steelers needed another body to back up running backs Jonathan Dwyer, Baron Batch, and Isaac Redman.

Jones doesn't fit the traditional mold of bruising Steeler backs, but he is a speedy, big play threat who can take it to the house on any given play.

He also has been injury prone, and has never been a feature back, even during his collegiate days.

Jones (5-10, 215) was originally selected out of the University of Arkansas in the first round (22nd overall pick) of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Prior to joining the Eagles this past offseason, Jones spent five seasons with Dallas.

For his career, Jones registered 2,728 rushing yards with 11 touchdowns, while averaging an impressive 4.6 yards per carry. He also has 1,062 receiving yards on 127 receptions and three touchdowns.

Jones' home run threat ability makes him an asset on special teams, as he has returned 64 kicks for 1,534 yards (24.0 avg.) and one touchdown. Since 2008, Jones is the only player in the NFL to post a 60+ yard touchdown run, a 70+ yard touchdown reception, and a 90+ yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Although Bell reportedly will not need surgery, he could be out of the lineup for 6 to 8 weeks.

Robinson is in his second season after signing with Pittsburgh as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Temple University in 2012. He appeared on special teams in 12 games as rookie last season.
