The Dodgers Win, Streak, and Season in Numbers

August 17, 2013

The Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0 earlier tonight to continue their historic hot streak. Here at the DSH we decided to have a little fun and take a look at all the significant numbers related to the game and the streak.

The number 0: The Dodgers pitchers have not given up a run in their last 27 innings.

The number 1: Saturday was Clayton Kershaw's first win over the Philadelphia Phillies in nine career starts.

The number 1.80: Kershaw’s eight scoreless innings on Saturday night resulted in his ERA dropping to 1.80.

The number 2: The Dodgers currently are tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the second best record in the National League. The Atlanta Braves lead the National League (and all of MLB) with a 75-47 record.

The number 3: The Phillies were only able to get three hits total off Kershaw and reliever Brandon League over nine innings. Third baseman Juan Uribe went 3-3 with 3 RBIs.

The number 5: The Dodgers won 5-0 and the biggest hit of the game was a three-run home run by #5, Juan Uribe.

The number 6: Saturday’s win was the Dodgers sixth consecutive win in Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park.

The number 8: Kershaw pitched eight innings and struck out eight batters on Saturday night. He leads the NL in both innings pitched (190 1/3) and strikeouts (182).

The number 8.5The Dodgers victory kept them 8 ½ games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West division. The Diamondback had beaten the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier, 15-5.

The number 9: On Sunday, the Dodgers will seek to sweep the Phillies for their ninth series sweep of the season.

The number 10: The Dodgers have now won ten consecutive games, their longest winning streak since they won eleven games in a row back in 2006.

The number 12: Despite lowering his MLB-best ERA, Clayton Kershaw earned only his twelfth win of the year. He is 12-7 and tied for the team lead with Dodgers Rookie-of-the-Year candidate Hyun-Jin Ryu. Ryu is 12-3 with a 2.91 ERA. The Dodgers have also won twelve consecutive one-run games.

The number 16: Saturday was the 16th shutout thrown by the Dodgers' pitching staff this year, leading the majors.

The number 17: On Sunday, June 16th, the Dodgers lost the final game of a three game series to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-3. The Dodgers lost the series in Pittsburgh, two games to one. Since that time the Dodgers are unbeaten in their last 17 series (13-0-4).

The number 18: The Dodgers have made up eighteen games on once-NL West division leading Arizona since the hot streak started. On June 22nd the Diamondbacks led the last place Dodgers by 9 ½ games. They now trail the first place Dodgers by 8 ½ games.

The numbers 19 and 20: The Dodgers have won nineteen of their last twenty road games. The last team to do this was the 1916 New York Giants, according to STATS.

The number 21: The Dodgers victory over the Phillies was Philadelphia’s 21st loss in their last 25 games.

The number 22: Kershaw wears #22, rookie phenom Yasiel Puig is twenty-two years old, the Dodgers ridiculous play began on June 22nd, and the Dodgers are now 22 games above .500.

The number 25: The Dodgers are now 25-3 since the All Star Break. Also, Clayton Kershaw is just twenty-five years old and the last time the Dodgers won the World Series was 1988…twenty-five years ago.

The number 35: The Dodgers road record of 35-25 is the best in the National League.

The number 42: The Dodgers have now won 42 out of their last 50 games. Also, earlier this year the movie “42” about the career of Brooklyn Dodger Jackie Robinson was out. Every team in MLB has Jackie’s number 42 retired so we would have put this number in the article no matter what.

The number 50: Aside from the aforementioned forty-two of fifty games stat, the number fifty was significant in another way after Saturday night’s game. When the Dodgers score four or more runs for Clayton Kershaw, he is 50-0.

The number 66: The Dodgers absurdly entertaining rookie RF Yasiel Puig wears number 66. He went 2-4 with a double to raise his average to .364. Do we need another reason?

The number 72: The Dodgers won their 72nd game of the season. They are now 72-50.

The number 76: Despite the great play of Clayton Kershaw, Yasiel Puig, and Hanley Ramirez, Manager Don Mattingly consistently states that Adrian Gonzalez is the team’s MVP. Gonzalez leads the Dodgers with 76 RBIs this season.

The number 100: Back to the 42 out of 50 streak. It’s as good as any 50-game stretch in baseball in over 100 years! The last streak better took place in 1912.
