Thabiso Mchunu's cruiserweight bout cancelled one day before the fight

June 5, 2014

In an embarrassing turn of events that should never happen to a world class boxing card, Real Steel Promotions' Electric Storm Tournament scheduled to take place tomorrow Pretoria, South Africa, has been postponed.  Headlining local cruiserweight Thabiso Mchunu was scheduled to participate in a ten-round undercard bout against Brazilian Julio Cesar Dos Santos, but his that fight has been postponed along with the rest of the show.

The reason? According to a notice posted on Real Steel's website, the show was postponed "due to logistical reasons and circumstances beyond our control."

Mchunu's co-promoter, Damian Michael of Show Pony Promotions, stated, "It is not an ideal situation when something like this happens at the last minute, but unfortunately that is the nature of the boxing business in a third world country.  Now we are going to focus on returning to the United States to fight and winning a world title."

Mchunu is best known in the U.S. for his recent upset win over former heavyweight contender Eddie Chambers.

"We are so sorry to hear that this event will not take place as planned.  I cannot imagine how upset Thabiso and Damian must be," said Kathy Duva of Main Events, Mchunu's other co-promoter.  "We are working with Damian to find another fight for Thabiso and will continue with our plans to bring Mchunu back to the U.S. later this year."
