Receiver Jordy Nelson signs extension with Green Bay Packers

July 26, 2014

In a move that should make star quarterback Aaron Rodgers very happy, Green Bay Packers General Manager Ted Thompson announced today that the team has signed wide receiver Jordy Nelson to a contract extension.  Other outlets have reported that the deal is with $39 million over 4 years and includes an $11.5 million signing bonus.

In 2013, Nelson posted career highs with 85 receptions for 1,314 yards (15.5 avg.), becoming just the fourth player in franchise history to register at least 85 receptions and 1,300 receiving yards in the same season. He ranks sixth in the league with 30 touchdown receptions since 2011, and fifth in the NFL (min. 125 receptions) over that span with a 16.4-yard receiving average.

“Jordy’s hard work and dedication has made him a good player, teammate, and a core member of this team. We are pleased to come to an agreement that will extend his Packers career,” Thompson said.

Nelson, who was drafted out of Kansas State in the second round (No. 36 overall) by the Packers with the first of their three second-round selections in 2008, has eclipsed 65 receptions and 1,200 yards receiving in two of the last three seasons (2011, 2013).

Nelson recorded 15 touchdown receptions in 2011, joining Sterling Sharpe (18 in 1994) and Don Hutson (17 in 1942) as the only Packers to reach that mark in a single season. He ranks No. 11 in franchise history in receiving yards (4,590), No. 15 in receptions (302) and No. 12 in receiving touchdowns (36). Nelson is tied for No. 2 among active NFL players with three career touchdown receptions of 80-plus yards.
