LA Lakers Kobe Bryant tears rotator cuff

January 22, 2015

Los Angeles Lakers star guard Kobe Bryant once again could have his season end early, as the preliminary results from an MRI exam today revealed that he has a tear of the rotator cuff. Bryant will return to Los Angeles today and will be examined by team doctors tomorrow, at which point the Lakers will issue an update on his condition.

Bryant injured his right shoulder on a dunk in the second half of last night's game against the Pelicans in New Orleans.  He later attempted to play through the injury, but had to resort to shooting with only his left hand.

Recently, there has been speculation that the Lakers would shut Bryant down after the All-Star break in order to rest him for next season.  Many have felt that such a notion is truly just code-speak for tanking, as the Lakers hope to retain their top-five protected first round pick rather than have it go to the Phoenix Suns (via the Steve Nash trade).

Now with this injury, there is even less incentive for the Lakers to keep Bryant in the lineup, especially considering there could be surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process involved.

Kobe Bryant Update: Diagnosis confirms tear of rotator cuff

One day after this initial report was published, the Lakers issued the following release on Kobe Bryant's shoulder injury:

"Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, who suffered a torn rotator cuff injury during Wednesday night’s game in New Orleans, was examined today in Los Angeles by team physician Dr. Steve Lombardo of the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic.  Dr. Lombardo confirmed the diagnosis of a torn rotator cuff and discussed options, including the possibility of surgery, with Bryant.  Bryant is scheduled to be examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache of the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic on Monday, and a decision is expected to be made at that time."
