The Anaheim Ducks are comfortably leading the Pacific Division, but clearly have their eyes on a bigger prize, as today the team announced that it has acquired left wing Tomas Fleischmann from the Florida Panthers in exchange for left wing Dany Heatley and Anaheim’s third-round selection in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
Fleischmann, 30, figures to add some offensive skills and experience to the team, as he has scored 122-182=304 points with 164 penalty minutes (PIM) in 567 career NHL games with Washington (2005-11), Colorado (2010-11), and Florida (2011-15).
Fleischmann has also appeared in 29 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Capitals and Panthers, collecting 4-4=8 points with 12 PIM. He set career highs in goals (27), assists (34), points (61), and games played (82) with Florida in 2011-12.
Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau is also quite familiar with his game, as Fleischmann spent four seasons with Boudreau in Washington (2007-10). Fleischmann also played for Boudreau in Hershey of the American Hockey League (AHL) from 2005-07, winning the Calder Cup Championship in 2006.
Selected by Detroit in the second round (63rd overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Fleischmann earned 7-14=21 points with a career-high +12 rating and eight PIM in 52 games with Florida this season. The Czech Republic native has represented his country in several international tournaments, including the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, 2008 and 2013 World Championships, and 2003 and 2004 World Junior Championships. He can be a free agent at the end of the season.
Heatley, 34, was scoreless in six games with the Ducks this season and has been limited by injury. Signed by Anaheim as a free agent, Heatley also collected 2-5=7 points with eight PIM in 25 games with the Norfolk Admirals, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the AHL.
