Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Perk out for season following surgery, team signs Trey Mitchell

March 27, 2015

The Los Angeles Galaxy lost their backup goalkeeper and perhaps found his replacement too, as the club announced today that Brian Perk has undergone successful surgery after dislocating and fracturing his left ankle. Perk will miss the remainder of the 2015 MLS season.

In addition, the team also announced that it signed goalkeeper Trey Mitchell.

Perk, 25, joined the Galaxy when he was claimed off of waivers from the Philadelphia Union in 2010. In his previous five years with the club, he has made seven starts in goal while recording two shutouts. In 2014, Perk went undefeated in his two starts with the Galaxy, earning a draw on the road against Real Salt Lake March 22, and recording a victory April 6 at StubHub Center against Chivas USA.

A four-year standout at UCLA, Perk started in all 61 one of his appearances as a Bruin, earning a 29-18-12 record, a 1.01 goals against average and 16 clean sheets in addition to helping his team reach the NCAA Tournament in each of his four years.

Meanwhile, Mitchell is expected to play a reserve role behind starting keeper Jaime Penedo.

“Trey is a talented goalkeeper who can provide us with solid depth,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach and General Manager Bruce Arena. “We are happy to add him to our roster and look forward to his contributions as a member of our team.”

Mitchell, 31, began his college career at Citrus College, where he recorded 97 saves with a 1.30 goals against average in his first two seasons before transferring to Cal State Dominguez Hills.

After redshirting in 2012, the 6-2, 195-pound Mitchell played the following two seasons for CSUDH, making 20 starts and recording 71 saves for a .85 goals against average, the fourth best in school history.
