Long Beach State men’s basketball head coach Dan Monson today announced the signing of a highly-rated local prep recruit, as Fairfax High School guard Lorne Currie has signed a National Letter of Intent during the late signing period and will join Long Beach State for the 2015-16 season.
“We are excited to add Lorne to our freshman class,” said Monson. “Lorne adds a versatile, athletic guard that can play multiple positions to our roster. He can score in a variety of ways and makes his teammates better. The bottom line is Lorne helped Fairfax win a lot of games, and we feel he can help Long Beach State do the same.”
Rated as a three-star recruit by both Yahoo! Sports and ESPN, Currie was ranked as the No. 16 recruit in the state of California, and is the highest ranked California recruit of any player signed by the Big West for 2015-16.
Currie, who had his share of out-of-state offers but preferred to stay near home, helped lead Fairfax to a 32-3 record as a senior, and a fifth place finish in the California Open Division.
Coached by Harvey Kitani, the Lions were ranked as the No. 23 team in the nation in 2014-15, and reached the Southern California Open Division Finals after claiming the LA City Championship.
As a senior, Currie averaged 14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while earning First-Team All-City Open Division Honors and First-Team All-Western League honors. A third-team Division I All-CIF selection, Currie was also named MVP of the Under Armour Torrey Pines Holiday Classic, helping lead Fairfax to the team championship of the 16-team tournament.
Currie joins guard Noah Blackwell, and forwards LaRond Williams and Mason Riggins, as part of the 2015-16 recruiting class for the Beach.
