Los Angeles Galaxy's Robbie Keane named MLS Player of the Week

August 25, 2015

In a showcase match featuring several of the league's top international stars, it was Los Angeles Galaxy forward Robbie Keane who proved to be the most effective, and based on that outstanding performance against New York City FC in a 5-1 win, Keane was today named Major League Soccer's Player of the Week.

It is Keane’s third MLS Player of the Week award of 2015, tied for the most in Major League Soccer.

In the win on Sunday over NYCFC, Keane was responsible for four of the Galaxy’s five goals, scoring two goals and recording two assists to bring his season total to 15 goals and seven assists.

In the 36th minute of play, Keane provided the assist to Gyasi Zardes to open the scoring against NYCFC. He doubled the score shortly after halftime when he found space behind the backline and chipped a shot past goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

The Irishman then provided the assist on a through ball to fellow forward Giovani dos Santos in the 67th minute to make the score 3-0. With just nine minutes left in the match, the Galaxy captain provided the fifth goal of the afternoon when he buried a pass from Robbie Rogers.

Of Keane’s 15 goals this year, 13 have been scored in the last nine games, including goals in his last four consecutive MLS games.

In his last 10 appearances in all competitions, the striker has scored 15 goals. In 101 MLS appearances all time for the Galaxy, Keane has now scored 68 goals and recorded 42 assists, including 20 game-winning goals and 16 game-winning assists.

Galaxy players have won the Player of the Week award five times this year, the most of any team in MLS.
