LA Galaxy sign English defender Ashley Cole

January 27, 2016

The Los Angeles Galaxy continue to bring in high-profile internationals to MLS, as the club announced today that it has acquired its latest big name in English star Ashley Cole. A standout defender, Cole will occupy an International roster spot pending the receipt of a P-1 Visa and ITC.

Terms of the deal, which had been rumored for weeks, were not disclosed.

“Ashley is one of the world’s most successful defenders and has played at the highest level of competition throughout his career,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach and General Manager. “He can provide our defense with valuable experience. We look forward to his contribution to our club this season.”

Cole, 35, will definitely bring talent and experience to the team, but also adds another pair of older legs to an already veteran roster.  Undoubtedly, Arena is putting together a squad that is built to win now, but given the number of veterans on the team, the roster could find itself dealing with the usual culprits that typically confound older players -- injuries, fitness, and decreased energy.

Cole began his professional career when he signed with Arsenal in 1998. He went on to make 228 total appearances, winning two Premier League Titles and three FA Cups for the North London side. Cole also featured for Arsenal’s 2003-04 squad that went undefeated in league play.

The defender transferred to Chelsea in 2006 and became one of the club’s most accomplished defenders, making 229 appearances and winning two Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League trophy and four FA Cups. He was named to the PFA Team of the Year, England’s award for the top players in all tiers of competition, four times during his storied career (2003, 2004, 2005, 2011).

After over 10 years in England, Cole moved to Italy when he signed with A.S. Roma in Serie A, Italy’s top-flight professional division, where he spent two seasons.

In addition to his club career, Cole has played extensively for the English National Team, making World Cup appearances in 2002, 2006, and 2010, as well as in UEFA Euro 2004 and 2012. In all, Cole made over 100 appearances for his country, making him the most capped fullback in English history.
