Anaheim Ducks complete multiple trades at the deadline

February 29, 2016

The Ducks and Kings did not make any league-altering deals at today's trade deadline, but they were at least active.   In the end, NHL clubs made 19 trades involving 37 players today prior to the trade deadline.

Ducks complete four trades

The Anaheim Ducks were quite busy today, executing four deals to bolster their roster for a postseason run.

In the first trade, the Ducks acquired 6-4, 202-pound defenseman Martin Gernat and a fourth-round selection in the 2016 NHL Draft from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for left wing Patrick Maroon.

Gernat, 22, earned three assists (0-3=3) with an even plus/minus rating and 14 penalty minutes (PIM) in 22 games with Bakersfield, Edmonton’s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). Selected by Edmonton in the fifth round (122nd overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft, Gernat has recorded 5-28=33 points with 72 PIM in 133 career AHL games with Bakersfield and Oklahoma City.

Maroon, 27 (4/23/88), scored 4-9=13 points with 54 PIM in 56 games with the Ducks this season. Acquired from Philadelphia with David Laliberte in exchange for Danny Syvret and Rob Bordson on Nov. 21, 2010, Maroon has posted 26-53=79 points with 249 PIM in 204 career NHL games.

The Ducks second trade of the day involved the acquisition of forward Brandon Pirri from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a sixth-round selection in the 2016 NHL Draft.

Pirri, 24, has appeared in 157 career NHL games with Chicago and Florida, collecting 46-29=75 points with a +9 rating and 52 penalty minutes (PIM). The 6-0, 183-pound forward posted 11-13=24 points in 52 games this season with Florida and has 33 goals in his last two NHL seasons with the Panthers (101 games).

The Ducks third trade of the day involved the acquisition of left wing Jamie McGinn from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a conditional third-round selection in the 2016 NHL Draft.

McGinn, 27, scored 14 goals along with 27 points (14-13=27) and 10 penalty minutes (PIM) in 63 games with Buffalo this season. The 6-1, 205-pound winger co-led the Sabres in game-winning goals (3), ranked tied for second in power-play goals (6), fourth in power-play points (6-3=9) and shooting percentage (12.8%), and tied for fourth in assists. One of three Sabers to appear in all 63 games this season, McGinn also ranked fourth among team leaders in hits (113).

Selected by San Jose in the second round (36th overall) of the 2006 NHL Draft, McGinn has collected 83-72=155 points with 182 PIM in 429 career NHL games with the Sharks, Colorado Avalanche and Sabres. He has scored 13 career game-winning goals and 22 power-play goals over his eight NHL seasons. McGinn has also appeared in 29 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with San Jose and Colorado, recording 2-4=6 points with 40 PIM.

In the team's fourth deal, the Ducks acquired right wing Corey Tropp from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for right wing Tim Jackman and a seventh-round selection in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Tropp, 26, has appeared in 148 career NHL games with Buffalo and Columbus, collecting 6-21=27 points with 133 penalty minutes (PIM). The 6-0, 185-pound forward has scored 11-17=28 points in 51 games with the Albany Devils of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season.

Jackman, 33 (11/14/81), scored 1-1=2 points with 33 PIM in 22 games this season with the San Diego Gulls, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the AHL. Acquired from Calgary in exchange for a sixth-round selection in the 2014 NHL Draft on Nov. 21, 2013, Jackman has collected 32-43=75 points with 806 PIM in 483 career NHL games with Columbus, Phoenix, Los Angeles, New York Islanders, Calgary and Anaheim. He set career bests with the Flames in 2010-11, including goals (10), assists (13), points (23) and plus/minus (+4).

Kings bring in another Sutter

The Los Angeles Kings have acquired forward Brett Sutter from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for forward Scott Sabourin, Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Sutter is expected to be assigned to Ontario (AHL).

Sutter, 28, has played in 57 games with the Iowa Wild (AHL) this year, recording 14 points (4-10=14) and 37 penalty minutes. He is the son of Kings Head Coach Darryl Sutter.

The 6-0, 200-pound native of Viking, AB has played for the Wild, Carolina Hurricanes and Calgary Flames. In 60 career NHL games he has 10 points (2-8=10) and 40 penalty minutes. Drafted in the sixth-round (179th overall) by the Flames during the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter has appeared in 405 regular-season games in the AHL, posting 157 points (64-93=157) and 386 penalty minutes.
