LA Galaxy's Mike Magee named MLS Player of the Week

March 8, 2016

When it comes to making a return debut with his old team, LA Galaxy forward Mike Magee sure knows how to do it in style, as Magee was named MLS Player of the Week for Week 1 of the 2016 MLS Season by the North American Soccer Reporters.

Magee sparked a 4-1 comeback win Sunday evening against D.C. United in the team’s 2016 opening match, playing a part in all four Galaxy second-half goals. Not only did Magee score two goals, but he also added an assist and earned a penalty kick.

With the Galaxy down 1-0, Magee took a corner that was headed home by defender Daniel Steres to tie the score. Magee then scored the game-winning goal – the 22nd game winner in his MLS career – just 10 minutes later when he tallied on an assist from Sebastian Lletget.

With less than 10 minutes left in the match, Magee broke behind the United D.C. and was tripped by goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra to earn a penalty kick, taken by Robbie Keane. The forward finished the night in the 87’ minute when he buried a header from a Steven Gerrard free kick.

Magee’s standout performance came in his first game back with the Galaxy since being traded in 2013 to the Chicago Fire in exchange for Robbie Rogers. In all time MLS play, the veteran now has scored 66 goals and notched an additional 35 assists. His brace marked the third time the forward has recorded a multi-goal game for the LA Galaxy.

The LA Galaxy are in action this week when they travel for a road matchup against the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, March 12, at 4 p.m. PT live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes.
