LA Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager earns NL Rookie of the Month honor

July 2, 2016

After swinging a red-hot bat in June, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Corey Seager has been named the National League Rookie of the Month.

Seager led Major League rookies in hitting (.343, 35-for-102), hits, home runs (8), runs (20), total bases (69), and slugging (.676), while pacing National League rookies with a .409 on-base percentage and eight doubles. The 22-year-old slugger’s 13 RBI were the third-most among NL rookies last month.

This is Seager's first career monthly award, and the first for a Dodgers rookie since Alex Guerrero (April 2015).

Other rookies receiving votes for the National League Rookie of the Month Award included Colorado’s Trevor Story; Milwaukee’s Zach Davies; Atlanta’s Dario Alvarez; and Aledmys Diaz of the St. Louis Cardinals.

In addition, Wil Myers of the San Diego Padres and Jon Lester of the Chicago Cubs were named the National League Player of the Month and National League Pitcher of the Month, respectively.

In 26 games last month, Myers led the Majors with 33 RBI and 21 extra-base hits while pacing the NL in total bases (75), home runs (T-1st , 11) and runs scored (T-1st , 25). His .765 slugging percentage ranked second among National Leaguers. The North Carolina native also posted a .327 batting average for the month, collecting 32 hits in 98 at bats. This is his first career monthly honor, and the first for a Padres position player since Chase Headley (September 2012).

In six starts last month, Cubs hurler Jon Lester went 4-0 with a 1.41 ERA (seven earned runs in 44.2 innings pitched) and 44 strikeouts. The three-time All-Star tied for first in the Majors in innings pitched during the month of June, was tied for first among National Leaguers in wins, and posted the NL’s second-lowest ERA while tying for second in strikeouts. This is his fourth career Pitcher of the Month honor and first in the National League. Teammate Jake Arrieta was the last Cubs hurler to claim Pitcher of the Month honors, winning for April of this season.

Other players receiving votes for the National League Player of the Month Award included Chicago’s Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant; Colorado’s Carlos Gonzalez; Matt Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals; and Seager.

For the National League Pitcher of the Month Award, other players receiving votes included Washington’s Max Scherzer; Arizona’s Zack Greinke; New York’s Jeurys Familia; Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers; Atlanta’s Julio Teheran; and Miami’s Jose Fernandez.
