Los Angeles Galaxy and Nigel de Jong part ways

August 31, 2016

Things are definitely changing in Carson these days, as the Los Angeles Galaxy announced today that the club and Nigel de Jong have agreed to mutually terminate the midfielder’s contract. De Jong, 31, departs after joining the Galaxy this offseason.

The loss of de Jong, one day after the team announced that forward Gyasi Zardes would miss the remainder of the regular season, greatly affects the team's championship expectations.

De Jong helped shore up the Galaxy defense with his physical play this season, as his presence on the pitch will surely be missed.  He certainly was not without controversy however, as his physical play led to suspensions this season.

“We thank Nigel for his contributions to the Galaxy this season,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach and General Manager Bruce Arena. “He has been a fantastic member of the LA Galaxy and we wish him the best of luck with Galatasaray.”

This year, De Jong made 18 starts in MLS for the Galaxy. He signed with the club this offseason after most recently playing for A.C. Milan in Italy.

The Galaxy host Columbus Crew SC this Saturday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. PT at StubHub Center live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes.
