Los Angeles Galaxy forward Gyasi Zardes out for the season

August 30, 2016

In a significant blow to the Los Angeles Galaxy's championship hopes, the team announced today that star forward Gyasi Zardes will miss the remainder of the 2016 MLS Regular Season due to a broken fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

Zardes suffered the injury Saturday during the Galaxy’s 0-0 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

This year, Zardes made 19 appearances in MLS play, scoring six goals and adding five assists, including two game-winning goals and three game-winning assists.  In his LA Galaxy career, the Hawthorne product has scored 32 goals and recorded 15 assists.

It is not yet known if Zardes will be available for the postseason, should the Galaxy make a deep playoff run.

In addition, Zardes may not be the only important player leaving the team, as controversial star defender Nigel de Jong reportedly is working on a transfer to the Turkish club Galatasaray.

Galaxy head coach and general manager Bruce Arena confirmed to the MLS' website that a transfer is in the works, although the team has not issued a press release yet on the matter.

The Galaxy are in action next when they host Columbus Crew SC at 7:30 p.m. PT this Saturday, Sept. 3 at StubHub Center live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes.
