Angels star Mike Trout named 2016 American League MVP

November 17, 2016

Los Angeles Angels’ superstar outfielder Mike Trout today was named the 2016 American League Most Valuable Player in an announcement made by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). It marks the second career MVP award for Trout, the unanimous winner in 2014.

Trout becomes just the 27th player to win multiple BBWAA MVP awards, and at 25 years and 56 days old at the end of the season, he is the third youngest player ever to win the award multiple times, behind only Detroit’s Hal Newhouser (24 years, 133 days) and Cincinnati’s Johnny Bench (24 years, 302 days).

Trout garnered 19 first place votes and eight second place votes and one third place vote for a total of 356 points in the balloting process, 45 points ahead of second place finisher Mookie Betts of the Boston Red Sox (311 points).

In five full seasons, Trout has now finished in the Top 2 of the MVP vote every year, becoming just the second player all time to finish in the Top 2 of the MVP ballots in five or more consecutive seasons, joining Barry Bonds (1999-04).

Trout completed another monster year in 2016, batting .315 (173/549) with 123 runs scored, 32 doubles, five triples, 29 home runs, 100 RBI and 30 stolen bases.

The Halo center fielder led the Majors in runs, walks, and OBP, and finished in the American League’s Top 10 in average (6th), triples (T10th), steals (T2nd) and slugging (5th). He became just the second player in MLB history to hit .315, walk 115 times, score 120 runs and steal 30 bases, joining Ty Cobb in 1915.

Additionally, Trout led the A.L. in both runs and walks for the second time in his career (also in 2013), becoming the first player to accomplish the feat multiple times since Ted Williams.

At 25-years old, Trout’s resume now includes two A.L. MVP Awards (2014 and 2016), an A.L. Rookie of the Year Award (2012), five All-Star Game selections (2012-16), two All-Star Game MVP honors (2014 and 2015), five Silver Slugger Awards (2012-16), and an A.L. Hank Aaron Award (2014).

The 25-year-old captures the Angel franchise’s fourth MVP award. In 2014, Trout joined Vladimir Guerrero (2004) and Don Baylor (1979) as the only Halos to receive the honors and becomes the Club’s first multiple winner.

The Angels are now one of three franchises since 2004 that have featured the league’s MVP three different times, joining the Detroit Tigers (Justin Verlander in 2011 and Miguel Cabrera in 2012 & 2013) and the St. Louis Cardinals (Albert Pujols 2005 & 2008-09).
