Warriors' Kevin Durant suffers torn Achilles

June 12, 2019

As suspected, the worst news was confirmed for Golden State Warriors' star forward Kevin Durant, as an MRI revealed that Durant has suffered a ruptured Achilles.

As a result of the injury, Durant underwent surgery today at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. The surgery was performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley.   According to a statement by the Warriors, the surgery was successful and Durant is recovering well.

Durant exited Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday with 9:46 remaining in the second quarter due to the injury.  He previously had missed the past several weeks due to a calf injury on the same leg.

Although it is no surprise that Durant will miss the remainder of the playoffs, the injury news could change how many teams approach the offseason since Durant would have been the most coveted free agent on the market.

Now, teams could be less willing to offer a max deal for potentially damaged goods, as Durant's injury would likely involve many months of rehabilitation and recovery.

On the other hand, Durant might choose to exercise his player option rather than test the market, since he at least would get more than $30 million next season.

The Warriors currently trail the Toronto Raptors 3-2 in their best-of-seven series with Game 6 scheduled for tomorrow night.
