Patriots sign star cornerback Darrelle Revis

March 17, 2014

The ongoing arms race between the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots escalated once more, as the rumored signing of elite cornerback Darrelle Revis was confirmed today in an announcement by the Patriots.  Other outlets have reported that the deal is for one year at $12 million.

Revis, 28, is a veteran of seven NFL seasons with the New York Jets (2007-12) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2013). He was released by Tampa Bay on March 12, 2014, after demonstrating that he had recovered significantly from his ACL tear.

Last season, he started all 16 games for Tampa Bay and finished the year with 50 total tackles, one sack, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

In the AFC, the tale of the offseason has been the Broncos going all in for a Super Bowl win.  Denver has signed former Dallas superstar pass rusher DeMarcus Ware and has lured physical corner Aqib Talib away from New England.

By signing "Revis Island," New England gets an immediate replacement for Talib, and also keeps pace with Denver for AFC supremacy.

During his seven NFL seasons, Revis has played and started in 95 regular-season games and has registered 344 total tackles, 21 interceptions with three returned for touchdowns, five forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

The 5-foot-11, 198-pounder originally entered the NFL as a first round pick (14th overall) of the Jets in the 2007 NFL Draft out of Pittsburgh.  He has been selected to five Pro Bowl (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013), earned three first-team All Pro honors (2009, 2010 and 2011) and was named AFC Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 after finishing the year with 72 total tackles and six interceptions.
