UNLV football adds two receivers to recruiting class

May 24, 2019

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels Football program has added two wide receivers to its 2019 recruiting class with the addition of USC transfer Randal Grimes (6-4, 205) and junior college transfer Jacob Gasser (6-0, 180).

“Randal Grimes had a lot of options to choose from so we are excited he decided to come home and be a Rebel,” said Head Coach Tony Sanchez. “He is an elite athlete with size that creates matchup problems for opponents. He will be a threat for our offense all over the field and especially in the red zone.”

Grimes is a Las Vegas native who was a highly sought-after recruit out of Desert Pines High School when he initially signed with USC in 2017. He played in three games as a first-year freshman wide receiver and then preserved a redshirt year last fall by playing in less than four games for the Trojans. Grimes will petition the NCAA for immediate eligibility in 2019, otherwise he will sit out this fall and have two seasons of eligibility remaining starting in 2020.

Gasser, a local Southern California player from Los Alamitos, played two seasons at Cerritos College and is the only junior college receiver in the class.  He totaled 65 catches for 1,129 yards and four touchdowns during his time with the Falcons. Also a track standout, the speedster competed in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter and relay races in both high school and junior college.

“Jacob Gasser is an extremely fast athlete – he ran a 10.6 100-meters – who has outstanding ball skills,” said Sanchez. “He brings with him a lot of game experience after being very productive at the JUCO level and will compete for time immediately.”

UNLV’s overall 2019 recruiting class is now made up of 12 high school players, 11 junior college transfers, and one four-year transfer. The breakdown also sees 13 defensive players and 11 on offense: 5 DL, 5 DB, 4 WR, 4 OL, 3 LB, 2 RB, and 1 QB.

The entire group consists of student-athletes whose hometowns are spread among 11 states: 11 from California, three from Nevada, a pair from Louisiana, and one each from Hawai’i, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, Ohio, and South Carolina.

UNLV opens its 2019 season August 31 versus Southern Utah.
